The Hammer Exercise Book
The Hammer Exercise system came about as a solution to a common problem “Rapier Shoulder,”
When I started learning to fence with a rapier I was already an experienced
fencer with many years of foil, saber and a epee, as well as a few years of
Japanese sword technique, under my belt. I had legs like steel pillars and
hands like lightening. None of that, however, prepared me for the particular
physical demands that rapier fencing put on the arms. Specifically, one has to
be able to keep the arm extended for long periods of time, as with epee, while
still having the strength to keep that arm loose and fluid, and sensitive to
the feel of the opponent’s blade, all while hefting a much heavier weapon.
I soon discovered that the common fencing wisdom, “just keep doing it and it will eventually get better,” was in fact, a great strategy for orthopedic injury. Fortunately, by that time,
I was well into my research on supplementary exercises. By studying the
training methods of traditional renaissance practices, 19th century athletes,
and modern physical training theory, I came up with a fun, simple set of
exercises that can be practiced with common household items, or no equipment at
all, and yield results with minimum strain, all while increasing speed
flexibility and comfort!
I’ve endeavored to explain the principles behind the method in simple, sensible
ways, and the book is thoroughly illustrated. The exercises are broken into
three sections, One for power and range, one for accurate arm actions and one
for fluidity, and all of them encourage integrated movement of the entire upper
torso, rather than just the arm.
I released this to a few friends a number of years ago, and got some great
responses, including from friends of friends, who achieved great results. I don’t make any medical claims, but one individual even claimed it helped him recover
from an old shoulder injury. It’s a short & to the point book. Give it a try and you’ll be pleasantly rewarded! (We plan to release some video samples as time
permits, so stay tuned!)
